Career Development

The Career Development of each student is a vital component and function of the guidance department. Students are guided in making educational and occupational choices to develop and achieve their career goals.   Individual and classroom career guidance activities are scheduled for students throughout grades 6 to 12.

The American School Counselors Association (ASCA) has identified the following three Career Development standards for students:

Standard A Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions.
Standard B Students will employ strategies to achieve future career goals with success and satisfaction.
Standard C Students will understand the relationship between personal qualities, education, training and the world of work.

The Career Education and Work Standards, Chapter 4 of Title 22, which are part of the State Board of Educations regulations of required education for all students in Pennsylvania has developed the following four areas of career standards:

  • Career Awareness and Preparation
  • Career Acquisition (Getting a Job)
  • Career Retention and Advancement
  • Entrepreneurship

Beginning with the Class of 2015, all Forbes Road students are required to complete a Career Portfolio documenting each one’s career development activities grades 9 through 12.   Click here to read more about the Career Portfolio.
